Chanute AFB Alumni Association
Chanute Air Force Base was officially closed in 1993. In September 2006, over 300 former Chanute employees from 27 states returned to Chanute AFB for their first reunion. The Chanute Alumni Association was formed as a direct result of suggestions received from personnel who attended that first reunion. Don Weckhorst, Don Madden, Ron Eagan, Dale Lyons and "Johnny" Johnson were key figures in getting the ball rolling. Some of the first steps included the selection of a Board of Directors and drafting official bylaws. Since then, more than 800 names and addresses of previous members of the Chanute family have been collected.
The Alumni Association has a simple objective...to "collectively represent, promote, and present a united forum for Chanute AFB Alumni to voice opinions and to make recommendations to the Association, Chanute Heritage foundation and the Chanute Air Museum". The Association will also work to keep the memory and history of Chanute Air Force Base, one of the best training facilities in the Department of Defense, alive for future generations.
